Ordering Flowers

Submitted by: anonymous  05/23/2009 12:25 AM

Here’s a tip when ordering flowers. Just do a search for a florist in the town, and zip code the recipient i.e. “florist in Macon, GA 12345.” When you call the florist, be sure to ask if it’s a free standing florist shop, and not a toll free “order gatherer.” To make double sure, you can ask to speak to a floral designer to help you make an arrangement or plant selection. Also, be careful if you’re ordering online, be certain you're ordering from the site of an actual “brick and mortar” floral shop.

Toll free “order gatherers” are a middle man. They take your order, and take their cut (usually a sizeable amount) before forwarding it to an actual floral shop. For example, if want to spend a total of $45 for an arrangement, the “order gatherer” will subtract $15 for their fee, and only send the floral shop $30 to work with. They don’t tell customers they’re an order gatherer and taking a hefty chunk of their cash.

You’ll get much more for your money, and have a much nicer floral arrangement if you deal directly with a florist shop.

I used to work for a national company that had local florist, but where I worked was the call center (one on five in the US). Not only does the middleman take a cut, for us it was $8.99 and this was for taking, placing and guaranteeing the order. When the order is given to the florist the "$30" for the arrangement is reduced by whatever the amount the florist charges for a delivery fee. So the $45 arrangement has gone down to a $20 arrangement. Not a whole lot left for a really nice arrangement.

Check your credit card statement carefully for the next month or two. I had ordered flowers for my Mother. The order gatherer used my credit number to order flowers one month and expensive candy the next. The amounts were just under $100. My credit card company said this was not unusual. The thief is hoping the charges will pass unnoticed and will continue to do this until you alert the credit card company.
