Last year, TheTravelersNotebook.com came up with a list of 14 train routes that are cheaper than flying and that also don't cost you much in terms of time (while an airplane is obviously faster than a train, when you factor in all of the extra time around air travel, all told, a train can be just as a fast, if not faster).
While the prices listed in the article may have changed, a quick spot check of a few routes didn't show much of a difference. And we thought it's a good list to keep in mind for the next time you look to take a flight, as it may be worth checking to see if train travel is a better option. And now that you have to pay for extra bags, the train can be an even more attractive option.
We've listed the 14 routes below, but click through to read the full article and view the price differences between a train ride and a flight for each route. The article also lists 7 routes that take a bit longer than air travel but are cheaper options than flying.
1. Boston, MA to Portland, ME
2. Montreal, QB to Albany NY
3. New York, NY to Philadelphia, PA
4. Seattle, WA to Vancouver, BC
5. New York, NY to Albany, NY
6. Los Angeles, CA to San Diego, CA
7. Vancouver, BC to Portland, OR
8. Seattle, WA to Portland, OR
9. Philadelphia, PA to Washington, D.C.
10. Chicago, IL to Memphis, TN
11. Boston, MA to Philadelphia, PA
12. Baltimore, MD to New York, NY
13. New York, NY to Boston, MA
14. Washington, D.C. to New York, NY
