Save Money & Energy When Using Your Dishwasher

Submitted by: Tip Hero  05/25/2009 12:00 PM

The New York Times published an article recently that provides tips on how to get the most out of your dishwasher. Some of the information can help you save energy and save money. We pulled out a few excerpts below (our emphasis added in bold), but click through the link to the article at the bottom of this post to read more.

"Pre-rinsing dishes is a big mistake ... People assume that the dishwasher will perform better if you put in cleaner dishes, and that’s not true. Just scrape. Pre-rinsing with hot water is double bad, because you’re pumping water and electricity down the drain."

---

"Dishwasher detergent aggressively goes after food ... and if you don’t have food soil in the unit, it attacks the glasses, and they get cloudy," a process known as etching that can cause permanent damage.

---

It’s also important not to use too much detergent, he said.

How much do you need? That depends on how much food soil there is ... not how many dishes. If you have a light load ... don’t fill the detergent cup all the way."
The article also provides some information about how to clean your dishwasher and remove any blockages.

I always cringe when I hear people say not to pre-rinse, that pre-rinsed dishes won't be cleaner. Well, after living in multiple households I can tell you exactly what happened when I stuck dirty dishes with food pieces in the dishwasher. They came out shinier- with some food pieces still attached. It may be "bad" but I'll pre-rinse anyday to save myself from a nasty case of food poisoning.

Oh, I should say that -some- dishwashers are strong enough where you don't have to rinse, just none of the ones I've owned (or rented via apt).

As my roommate and family know, i am a nut over use of the dishwasher (something i clearly picked up from my mom). but its true, pre-rinsing is completely unneccesary (unless its been sitting around for days and is completely caked on, then a little work is probably a good idea). its usually more important to organize the dishes how they were meant to go in there than it is to wash everything before putting it in the dishwasher

Not all dishwashers are created equal. Some are able to dispose of large pieces of food while others are not. Dishwashers are not garbage disposals. If you have a new enough dishwasher that can handle the larger pieces of food, then I agree. However, if you have an older model like mine, then pre-rinsing is necessary. It is a good reminder though to watch the extra hot water consumption.

When purchasing a new dishwasher, spend a little more on one that has 2 rotating arms...one for the top rack and one for the bottom. I rarely have problems with stuck on food unless it has sat for a day or two. Also check that your arms are able to rotate each time you turn it on. If something is blocking the arm from rotating the dishes are not getting washed and you've wasted everything. (My Dad was an appliance repairman)

My husband repairs kitchen equipment for a living. In his words "dishwashers are not disposals." We pre-rinse.

Try the no detergent wash, I ofter just load my dishwasher up set to normal wash with out even putting any dishwasher detergent at all, after it finishes washing 1 hour all my dishes are clean and I didn't spent a penny on detergent.

That's eco friendly.
