Now that summer is here, I find myself wanting to get out more now that winter is over. But entertainment can add up. Here are some of my favorite cheap summer activities:
1) Visit the beach, the lake, the pool! - we have a garage full of boogie boards, games and chairs, so the beach trips are a full day of activity as long as we pack our lunch ahead of time
2) Nature Walk - we were lucky to have a national park nearby, but you can find a park to hike through in most towns, pack some trail mix and water and you are on your way. If you are really feeling ambitious bring a guide book and try to identify plants and animals.
3) Open Houses - I love visiting open houses! check local listings to see if there are any near by and make a day of touring neighborhood houses.
4) Local libraries, colleges and school events - they often host free, or next to free events open to the public, sporting events, plays, book readings, lectures etc. Check also book stores, they often hold lectures and readings too.
5) Join the YMCA - They host lots of events and summer sports for the kids and ours has a pool that is open all summer, makes for a cheap escape from the heat and the kids love it.
6) Outdoor Concerts & Plays - my town has free plays on saturdays and sundays at the park, you can offer a voluntary donation to support the program. great way to spend an evening.
7) Volunteer - the kids and I are off for the summer, but we make it a point to volunteer once a week. we have volunteered at the aspca, nursing homes, soup kitchens and at our church. great experience for the kids and we also enjoy ourselves and enjoy being part of the community.
8) Yard sale scavenger hunt- you can create your own list, but we like using the cards from our scattegories game, leaves things up for interpretation. we bring a long a couple of cameras and then we hop from yard sale to yard sale finding items that fulfill the list. when you find something for your list you write it down and snap a photo (if it is something they really want I might let them buy a couple of things). great fun and I get to enjoy yard-saling without having to worry about entertaining the kids!
9) Host a field day (or a game night) - we live in a neighborhood with a lot of kids, so we'll have a block party field day. each house hosts a couple of games, we have a handful of prizes and host a joint bbq. games range from bean bag toss, dunking for apples, mini golf (we just dig a hole in the yard and put a soho cup in it and lay day a mat for the "tee off"), three legged race, wheelbarrow race, egg toss, etc. the kids and grownups love it.
10) County or state fairs and community events - check with your city hall for a community calendar. These events are often free or have a nominal admission price. |
