My family and I are ardent, devoted cat lovers--we currently share our home and lives with a "kitty boy" and a "kitty girl." While cats don't need a wildly varied diet, they, as do we, do enjoy small treats on occasion. Our boy dislikes many of the commercial cat treats available, while most of them disagree with his kitty sister's tummy.
A few years ago my grandmother began growing pots of catnip for them as an alternative to bought treats. A package of seeds costs less than $1.00 at our local Wal-Mart SuperCenter, and, with just a little care, a pot of nip lasts quite a while. We pinch off a few leaves as sort of a "kitty salad," or we allow them to graze from the potted plant itself. Both of them are crazy about this treat, and it's probably much healthier than most of the commercial ones. (We do give them a crunchy treat for teeth-cleaning purposes.)
I am absolutely one of the world's very worst gardeners, but even I can manage and tend a small potted catnip garden! We dry the leaves that aren't eaten and use them to perk up old catnip toys by placing both the dried leaves and toys in a sealed ziplock bag in order to "rescent" the toys. |
