Amtrak lets you ship packages from one station to another and can get it there quickly. According to the Amtrak website:
Small Package Shipments
Weight limit for each item: 50 lbs (23 kg)
Size limit for each item: 3 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft (90 cm by 90 cm by 90 cm)
Weight limit for each shipment: 500 lbs (227 kg)
Heavy and Commercial Shipments
Individual pallets of up to 500 lbs (227 kg)
Weight limit for each non-palletized item: 50 lbs (23 kg)
Size limit for each non-palletized item: 3 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft (90 cm by 90 cm by 90 cm)
Weight limit for each shipment: 500 lbs (227 kg)
Amtrak will guarantee that your package will get there within 24 hours. You need to make sure that you have someone available to pick up the package within 48 hours.
Part of the reason shipping is cheaper when compared to UPS or FedEx is because you have to drop the package off at the station and someone else has to pick it up on the other end.
A local Sacramento, CA television station put together a breakdown of prices based on their research for 100 lbs to be shipped from Sacramento to Los Angeles:
- Amtrak: Cost = $34 and arrives within 24 hours
- UPS: Cost = $61 and arrives within two days
- FedEx: Cost = $61 and arrives within two days
