Use a Night Light for Longer Lasting CFLs

Submitted by: anonymous  06/01/2009 6:46 PM

Since we converted over to CFL bulbs I have learned that they wear out faster if you flick them on and off a lot, as you might if trying to save on electricity.

Some evenings I might be the only family member in the house, and so I have all lights off except where I am working in an upstairs home office. To go downstairs for a drink or snack from the kitchen means turning on enough lights so I don't kill myself in the dark.

We bought a night light, with on/off switch, and have put this in the central downstairs hall in the house. This way, in the evening we can turn out all lights, except for the room we're in. It provides enough light that I can see well enough to get myself a drink without turning on the two CFLs that hang over our kitchen island.

In addition, my husband works late nights and doesn't get home until after everyone else has gone to bed... except for teenagers who also may return home late. I just leave only this night light on, and the last one home switches it off.
