Keeping Rechargeable Batteries Straight

Submitted by: anonymous  06/02/2009 6:58 AM

I usually have four or five pairs of rechargeable batteries kicking around, and I needed some sort of system to keep the pairs together, and a system to to keep track of what was charged, and what needed to be charged. I went so far as to drill holes in a block of wood, two rows of pairs of holes, with a row for charged and a row for uncharged.

Well DUH! (Imagine me smacking myself in the forehead.) One day I realized there was a more logical and simpler way. Maybe this is obvious, but it didn't occur to me for a while.

I now bind pairs with a rubber band. If charged I put them together facing the same direction, and if uncharged I face them the opposite direction. So say I'm out for a hike with a portable CD-player/radio and I have spare batteries in my pocket. I need to switch batteries. I remove the rubber band from the charged set, bind the uncharged set, and put them in my pocket. At the end of the day when I empty my pockets, those uncharged batteries go on my bureau where I keep the charged ones. I am now never confused what is charged and what is uncharged.

I do this as well, but you should make sure that the sides of the batteries aren't in contact by putting the rubber bands in a figure 8 shape, so that there is rubber between the rechargeable batteries. Having the batteries touching will slow drain their power.

I only have two pairs of batteries. I keep one in the charger and one in my camera. When they need a charge, I switch and charge immediately. Then there is always one set ready to go. I find if I have more than two pairs, I lose them, which doesn't save me money.

I'm intrigued by Barry's comment from June 7, '09, regarding battery storage.

I am careful to remove batteries from infrequently used items, also to avoid end to end contact. But side to side? Is this because of insufficient "wrapping" or insulation? I wonder if it varies much brand to brand? Would it also be true of standard alkaline batteries?

I'll be doing some online research but also wanted to pose my questions here. Thanks,
