Upgrading Old Ten-Speed Bikes

Submitted by: AnnS  06/02/2009 11:28 AM

My husband and I both bought racing-style ten-speeds more than twenty-five years ago. Mine cost $150 and his cost $240. I have no clue what bikes of this quality would cost today. We've maintained them well, and they are as good as new.

However WE have changed in the last 25 years, and no longer wanted to ride hunched over, as one does with those low racing handlebars.

So we upgraded. It cost $18 each to buy the straight-type handlebars such as you see on mountain bikes. I also needed new compatible brake handles, which cost another $12. My husband was able to scavenge compatible brake handles from a dead bike we had around.

This was a huge improvement and feels like we have new bikes.

I went to get my old bike looked at and would cost more to fix it than I originally purchased it for after getting brakes and gears fixed.

I am trying to locate a site that talks about 10 speeds only, and if and WHEN they first came out after the 3, 5 speed, etc. and are they still functional? As I was given a bike for my B-day today... and need to fix up or just exactly what is really needed. It is a ROADMASTER - WITH STRAIGHT HANDLES, BUT, the right brake does not grab vary well, and how can I adjust them, on my own?

Thank you,
