| Smart Cell-Phone Use to Save Money |

Friends of ours have a $200 per month cell-phone plan, that they have for their four family members... this is in addition to their land phone.
We have two cell phones in our family of five. These are no-frills track phones purchased for about $10. We buy a plan that costs $6.67 per month per phone. This provides far more minutes than my husband and I use.
We use the cell phone almost exclusively for ways that save us money. My husband has a delivery job, so I can't contact him at an office. Typically, he might call home just before he heads to the market (sometimes he's driving past a market on his route) or I call him if I have a need. Since it costs us about $5 in gas per round trip to go to a major supermarket or mall, it's easy to see that the cell phone can pay for itself.
Often times we use the cell phone to connect to get a kid picked up somewhere. For example, if a kid misses the bus, I might be able to intercept another family member to do the pick-up on his or her regular drive home. It's also helpful for car-pool efforts.
We also use the cell phone as a safety tool. Since we live in a rural area, a cell phone is invaluable if a car breaks down in the middle of the night, or slides off a snowy road. It is also an important tool for hiking, hunting or fishing in remote areas. I've sometimes called family members with a heads-up with a weather report.
To conserve cell phone minutes we use the land line when it is available, and never use our phone for social calls.
My adult daughter uses her cell phone more than we do, and she is more likely to run out of minutes. She has smartly proposed that we swap phones for a month, so she can use up our 200-plus excess minutes.
