Smart Cell-Phone Use to Save Money

Submitted by: anonymous  06/02/2009 12:36 PM

Friends of ours have a $200 per month cell-phone plan, that they have for their four family members... this is in addition to their land phone.

We have two cell phones in our family of five. These are no-frills track phones purchased for about $10. We buy a plan that costs $6.67 per month per phone. This provides far more minutes than my husband and I use.

We use the cell phone almost exclusively for ways that save us money. My husband has a delivery job, so I can't contact him at an office. Typically, he might call home just before he heads to the market (sometimes he's driving past a market on his route) or I call him if I have a need. Since it costs us about $5 in gas per round trip to go to a major supermarket or mall, it's easy to see that the cell phone can pay for itself.

Often times we use the cell phone to connect to get a kid picked up somewhere. For example, if a kid misses the bus, I might be able to intercept another family member to do the pick-up on his or her regular drive home. It's also helpful for car-pool efforts.

We also use the cell phone as a safety tool. Since we live in a rural area, a cell phone is invaluable if a car breaks down in the middle of the night, or slides off a snowy road. It is also an important tool for hiking, hunting or fishing in remote areas. I've sometimes called family members with a heads-up with a weather report.

To conserve cell phone minutes we use the land line when it is available, and never use our phone for social calls.

My adult daughter uses her cell phone more than we do, and she is more likely to run out of minutes. She has smartly proposed that we swap phones for a month, so she can use up our 200-plus excess minutes.

We use our cell phone to coordinate efforts with bargain hunting. Recently I saw a very good sale on chicken and called home to ask my wife how much room we had in our freezer.

When my wife was at a name-brand sneaker outlet she saw our daughter's favorite-type sneakers for a very low price of $20 (about half the usual outlet price), and she called this daughter to double check her size and see if she should buy a pair.

Sometimes we call home or others about things we see at yard sales, for example we called our son to see if he needed a stew pot for his apartment. Sometimes I might be on my way to work, and see a yard sale not far from home, and give my wife a ring to let her know.

Our married daughter was recently in an antique shop, and called me to ask if a specific item was a good price. I got off the phone, did a little Internet researching, and called her back on her cell phone minutes later to say the price was only average, so she decided to pass on the purchase.

I changed my cell phone to a pay as you go phone. For $100 I get 400 minutes for a year. The minutes roll over on the anniversary date when I pay another $100. Text for 25 cents. That saved me $160 over my original plan that had been in place for the last 10 years with the original flip phone. Buy a new battery on eBay and save 80%.
