Avoid Checkout Pitfalls

Have you ever noticed that no matter what retail store you shop in (including grocery stores) at whatever time of the day you shop that there are never enough cashiers? They do this on purpose!

Why? Because as you wait in line you look at the magazines on display, see lots of little things you might "need," decide that you could use a candy bar or a bottle of pop. Those items aren't there by mistake! And as you keep dropping just-one-more-thing in your cart you are adding more to your bill.

Think about it this way:
Add one magazine (avg $5), and a bottle of pop ($1.50), and a candy bar ($0.69) to your cart and you've added more than SEVEN DOLLARS to your bill. Do that once a week and that's over $360 a year! And think of how many calories that you're adding to your waistline!

And this is another reason to shop without the kids. They want gum and cookies and potato chips and little toys (all of which are displayed at a child's-eye-level) and when they cause a scene when parents say No, what happens? The parents give in. More money gone from your wallet.

Don't let impulse buying destroy your budget!

This is soooo true. That is why the milk is in the back of the store, so you'll have to walk back there and see all the other stuff you could buy!!!!! Be smart and don't fall for their strategy. Make a list and get what you went for. My husband can go for a loaf of bread and spend 50.00!!!!!!!! LOL

The supermarket is counting on you making impulse purchases while in the check out line.

Nearly 40% to 50% of all of our purchases are impulse buys and per square foot the check out area is one of the most profitable areas in the entire store.

One of the ways to combat this "Checkout Line Jail" is to always have a snack in your glove compartment of your car.

Usually gum, candy bars, chips, or energy bars that you've picked up at the local dollar store. Knowing that you have something to eat close by allows you to pass on the edible temptations located in the check out line.

Magazines are an especially subtle trap. Supermarkets understand that magazines are masters at creating riveting headlines that make people want to read the articles inside.

Hooked by a magazine cover headline, we start reading an article but of course don’t have enough time to finish. So what do we do? - we simply place the magazine with the rest of our purchases.

Realize that most magazine articles can be read on line. Instead of throwing the magazine in your shopping basket simply take note of the magazines web address.

Not totally true, depends on what store. I can speak for one retailer (Target) which has a one plus one rule with people in line. Which means they call for backup cashiers from the sales floor to ring. Then they go back to the floor afterwords.

To have extra cashiers standing and waiting wouldn't be financially sound.

If that's their policy..shame on them..because if i cant check out in a proper amount of time..and i can wait...or if they open another line and NOT take the next person in the waiting line..i'll leave my stuff and leave the store and not return..

They do open another line, and take the next person who is waiting. Thus, no more than a minute are you waiting before your being waiting on. It works, and they have been doing that for over 10 years.
