Frugal Cooking Tips

Submitted by: Gale Osborn  06/07/2009 8:45 PM

  • First learn about spices and their flavors. What will go with what. Also learn the different methods of cooking. Is it baked, fried, boiled or simmered. I make all my own mixes. Recipes are on the internet. Make your own spice mixes.

My favorite baking mix is as follows:
    • 5lbs self-rising flour
    • 2 cups shortening
    • mix until it looks like cornmeal

Makes biscuits, pancakes, muffins and lots more. Use like Bisquick. Recipes are on line.

  • Once a week have a no-meat meal. Teach your family to like beans, all kinds. I told my grandson we were eating what cowboys ate and now he loves beans. Pinto beans cooked in a cast iron dutch oven with cornbread is our favorite.

  • Anything pre-packaged is very expensive. Food that is cheap can be made tastey by presentation and flavor.

  • Plan ahead and make menus. I buy Angel Food and plan my meals accordingly.

Good luck to all and let's save our money!!!!!!!!
