Make a Desk from an Old Bureau

Submitted by: anonymous  06/08/2009 6:46 AM

I often see dead bureaus on the curb. The structure of the bureau is sound, but it has missing and/or hopelessly damaged drawers. Especially when these pieces are solid-wood and vintage, it seems like a shame to throw them away.

We made our daughter a computer desk from a 31"-high dead bureau by removing everything but the top, back and sides of the bureau. Basically we removed the drawers, and the wood slats separating the drawers. We repainted the sides dark green and refinished the top in polyurethane.

Such an inventive way to salvage a discarded piece of furniture. And yours will last longer than anything you'd get at Walmart! It'll look better too. Now just have to keep my eye out for an old bureau.
