I picked up an antique ornate bridge lamp at a yard sale for $1. A "bridge lamp" is a floor lamp with some sort of arm that sticks out to hold the lamp shade.
The lamp I bought was missing the wiring and lamp socket, as the cast iron was cracked where the socket would screw on or attach to the bridge arm. I took a chance on this thinking my clever husband would figure out how to repair it. Well, he couldn't, and so it stayed in the garage.
A few months later I really needed a floor lamp to shine a light on a project, and got to thinking if I could use that bridge lamp stand somehow. I had an idea. We have a photography lamp... basically a socket with cheap aluminum shade, and with a clamp so the lamp can be hung up most anywhere to shine a spotlight. I clamped this on to my bridge lamp stand, and used a little picture hanging wire in a couple of critical places for extra stability. It worked great, and I decided to keep it on my home office.
The whimsical contrast between the ornate vintage stand and the high-tech shade amuses me.
It takes a little confidence to do tongue-in-chic home decorating. Not everyone who comes to my house will get it, and maybe think it is too bad I can't afford some nice new lamp from Wal-Mart. That's okay, because I get it.
I recently saw another example of this tongue-in-chic decorating in a magazine: reusing an old iron rake, minus wooden handle, as a wall rack to hold ties and belts.
I would enjoy reading about how other people cleverly reused "found" items in whimsical ways.
