Want to spruce up your home entertainment system? Consider Lifehacker's Top 10 Cheap or Free Home Theater Upgrades. We picked out a few of our favorites and summarized them below, but we encourage you to read the full Lifehacker article to see all 10 ideas, along with more information about each. Note that most of these require a bit of effort and some comfort working with computers and the like, so these may not be for everyone.
De-Clutter Ideas. Think about creative ways to hide your tape/CD/DVD/etc. collections. One idea they suggest is to use an old speaker (don't have one? -- consider looking for one at a yard sale -- or even better, ask friends (we're willing to bet that most people will gladly part with an old, broken speaker that's just taking up room)). You clear out the inside of the speaker, use the front as a door, and voila, you've got a little cabinet that looks cool and fits in with the room. They also link to another piece they put together that explains how you can store your DVDs (or CDs) using an old jewel case.
Make Your Own DVR. Don't want to shell out money to the cable company or for a TiVo? Consider making your own DVR if you've got an old (or cheap) computer you're willing to use for this purpose. While we haven't tried this ourselves, it does seem to require some patience and a little comfort working with computers.
DIY Speaker Mounts. Easy tip for saving money by mounting speakers yourself with inexpensive material.
Cheap Multi-Room Wireless System. If you're somewhat technically inclined, then this one may be for you. It's not exactly cheap, but it's cheaper than alternatives, and if you happen to have some of the equipment already, then this is a really cheap solution. For about $350-$450 (if you don't have any of the equipment), you can wirelessly play music from a single remote control in multiple rooms in your home.
