Obviously compare rates from the major players: budget, avis, hertz and make sure to compare the total price (including taxes and surcharge).

Inquire about any special offers and membership discounts. AAA usually offers discounts, but you can also find plenty of coupons on the web.

Also, if you have AAA, or auto insurance, the coverage might cover rental cars so you can waive additional insurance from the rental car. Make sure you know what your policy states.

Was wondering if any knows if is it cheaper to book online or in the store? I am guessing online.

I always book online first and get the smallest (read cheapest) car available and then I usually end up with free upgrades to bigger cars when I go to pick up the car. Seems to be their policy. Not that bigger is always better......

don't pay extra for the full tank from the rental company. it is a rip-off. map out nearby gas stations and fill up yourself.

I have also found great deals when I have booked online through Costco memmbership. Recently my trip to Portland I saved almost up to $75 for 5 days when I booked it through costco. So don't forget to go check the Costco website deals too if you have a costco membership.
