Nothing beats taking dad to a baseball game. He used to take us kids to Fenway once a year when we were little.. Now Fenway tickets are outrageous for a family of 7, so we take dad to go see the minor league Paw Sox team. We've lucked out a couple of times and seen some pros playing for their rehab.
Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for kids and hot dogs are only $2.75. If dad's been really good, we'll splurge on the $10 box seats. Either way, it's a great way to spend the day with family. |

My daughter just bought her father a birthday present of fresh cherries. He loves them, but doesn't buy them because even in season they're at least $4 a pound in our area. She bought him a bag that cost $7.
So if Dad is a thrifty guy, get him his favorite expensive food item. |

My husband is a voracious reader so books are always a big hit (he keeps a list of books he'd like to have so there's no guessing on our part)! He also wants a new set of headphones. |

I always find it fun and practical to give him $20 cash in a card along with a small special item(favorite candy bar, cheap-nice looking shirt, fishing lure,[whatever the hobby is]) to go along with the money filled card. We are on a monthly budget, so we make it work and are usually creative. It's sort of a game to get the most bang for your buck. If you are able to look around(not last minute)you can usually come up with something personal and fun. |

Make a pie. It only counts if the pie is completely from scratch... no store-bought crusts or fillings from a can or box. A real pie. If making an apple pie, this can cost five dollars just for good apples. I make pies from things we grow, or from inexpensive ingredients. So my pies are inexpensive. I do some with a woven lattice crust. Lemon meringue pie, made with lemon concentrate, is very good, inexpensive and a little impressive. |

Have the kids make their own video for dad and what he means to them, the funniest things dad did lately, their opinions of what dad does for them and of course, have them imitate dad doing something as THEY see him and observations of him.
Have them make the card that goes with the gift.
Costs nothing, but will be saved forever and looked back on lovingly. |

Lunch on Father's Day.
My father is 77 and buys whatever he needs or wants, so an appropriate gift is almost impossible.
Instead, I cook lunch on Father's Day (all his favorite foods) and invite the whole family over.
I usually have enough leftovers to send some home with him. |

My dad is 80 and most of his friends have passed away. I live an hour and a half away, so I try and spend the entire day with only him, doing whatever he wants to do. The gift of time is his favorite gift. |

Thanks for the suggestions posted by anonymous. I've already done the "oldies" cds, boxed sets of his favorite tv shows and favorite movies. One year I tried to remember all my special or favorite childhood memories and made a casette tape telling of all my speical growing up memories. He liked that one a lot. |

Try places were you wouldn't expect to find things for dad. Discount stores like Ross, Tuesday Morning, Marshall's, any outlets, etc. I find some of the coolest guy gifts going through there--although I do find more girl gifts. |

How about a picture either of him and his dad (that's what I'm doing this year), or a picture of his kids ? |

my dad likes gardening and hates to leave for days when he has inside and outdoor plants/garden ect.
I just bought this watering system for plants.
$6-12 for 2.
The ones I bought are (*12 for 2) genuine hand blown stained glass, easy to use and the
"plant will absorb the water from the globe as needed. As soil becomes dry, it releases oxygen into the globe, which in turn releases the exact amount of water your plant needs.
He has alot of stuff and doesnt want junk at his ripe age of 65, so this was nice! |
