I dreaded the times I was without a needed phone number and had to call information 411 from my cell phone, knowing there would be extra charges on my next bill. A few of those every month and it really started to add up.

I also found a way never to pay for 411 calls again which I'd like to share. When I was checking out a variety of prepaid cell phone plans, I found that the new StraightTalk plan from TracFone has free 411 calls. That is part of the $30 a month StraightTalk package which gives 1000 minutes plus 1000 text minutes and no connection fees.

you can call 1-800-free411. there's no charge, but there are ads you have to listen to, so it's better when you have free minutes.

also, at least with alltel, you can text google at 46645 and they'll give you the listing you're looking for. you can say, for example, "auto 12345" and it'll give you all the listings with "auto" in them in the 12345 area code. also works with residential listings. or you can use city & state, for example, "auto san francisco ca" and it'll give you listings for san francisco ca. that just costs whatever your text messages cost, in our case, unlimited, so free.
