Submitted by: anonymous  06/12/2009 6:33 AM

I am looking for any tips of warding off mosquitoes. We had rain for about 2 weeks and they are everywhere. Thanks.

I found this DIY remedy a few years ago:
Mix equal parts flat beer, antiseptic mouthwash, and Epsom salt. Place this mixture in a garden sprayer that attaches to a hose or a spray bottle, and spray grass, plants, shrubsor any area where you want to keep mosquitoes away. Gets rid of mosquitoes, it's cheap and no harmful chemicals like the rest of the products on the market.

Dryer sheets, like bounce work great at keeping mosquitoes away from your skin. Just rub a dryer sheet over exposed areas. Also try burning citronella candles.

As far as how to keep them off of you, without chemicals, Tea Tree oil soap. In areas that are not right smack on the gulf coast, this keeps the critters off of you.

This year I bought a citronella plant and leave it on the deck. No misquotes on the deck! You might try it.

Again....The dryer sheet is a good remedy. My son is a cop and taught me to just pin one on or clip it into my ponytail. They keep them in their squad cars. No chemicals on your skin either!

I know this sounds a little nuts, but I used to have a big mosquito target on my back and now I get very few bites. I start in March or April taking one vitamin B1 tablet (250 mg) per day. It takes a few weeks to take effect, but my target is gone :) I heard it's best not to eat bananas in the summer!? I also supplement the effect by spraying myself with straight Listerine when I hike, etc.

Wear only light coloured clothing.
Burn small candles in an area away from where you are on the deck or patio - heat helps draw them away.
Do not use scented soaps, cosmetics, cologne, after shave, hair products etc if you are outside (especially in woods) as the scent is an attractant.

Ever notice they come out most when the air is very still? That is because they are poor fliers. Set up a fan or two to cool you and blow the buggers away.

I'm from Northern Ontario and man they are big there. Just stay in when they are at their worst and they do go away...around 10 p.m. and out you come to enjoy the evening again. Hey, it's worth a try.

PIC and a burner tray that I found at CVS work the best for me.
I have tried all of above and even the new Off fan that you attach. They still come and get me and no one else. I try everything once or twice and the dryer sheets and listerine were the biggest disappointment. Avon skin so soft did not work either.
