Enviro-friendly & Cheap Slug Repellent

Submitted by: Teresa V.  06/15/2009 3:57 PM

If you love your garden and your beautiful plants, like Hostas and new fresh garden veggies (lettuce) you know how annoying it is to have slugs come along and feast on your hard work!

Well, give them a feast of Beer! Just bury a small jar, cup or soupcan in the gardenbed, just with the rim at groundlevel. Fill with Beer, and the smell of it will draw them right into the "beerpool" and they will drown. They love beer more than anything, so it works.

If you have lots of slugs, you'll have to dig the jar or can out and empty it in the garbage (Don't really try to count them, it looks pretty gross!!)

It is safer for pets and small children, no chemicals and I think in the long run also cheaper.

It's also more humane than poisoning the critters, since they die drunk!
Good Luck!

I tried this with my strawberry patch. I think it attracted the slugs. I had a never ending supply of them and then never were eradicated. This year, I crushed clean empty egg shells and spread them in the strawberries. It worked like a charm. No more slugs.

Spreading ashes or diatomaceous earth around your prime plants also works well to deter these pests!
