Solution for Tattered Dust Jackets

Submitted by: anonymous  06/16/2009 8:03 PM

I buy books almost exclusively secondhand. And nearly all the secondhand books I buy come from yard sales. Right now I'm buying especially nice childrens' books to read to grand kids. I also collect nonfiction books I think might charm my grandchildren when they get a little older... for example, a 500-page book on the National Air and Space Museum, packed with color photos, that cost 50 cents.

This past weekend I bought two books for a quarter each, both with tattered dust jackets. With the children's book it was easy to simply discard the jacket because the underlying book cover had an identical design. So presto-chango... I had a "brand-new" book.

The second one I bought is a lovely book on freshwater fish, with full-page color illustrations (not photos) of individual fish. Very special book. I bought this as a gift for my husband's birthday. The jacket is tattered, but I wanted to keep it because it has a nice fish illustration and the underlying book cover is plain.

My daughter, who came to the birthday party, offered to take the book home and cover the jacket in with a dust-jacket cover (also called polyester cover)... a clear cover, like you see in libraries. To get an even better look at how these dust jacket covers really dress up a tattered jacket, go to a quality used/rare book store. Since older books are more valuable with the original jacket, shop owners routinely cover the jackets to preserve them from customer handling. But also a tattered jacket looks much nicer under these jackets covers.

My daughter, a self-described book worm, covers the jackets of new hard-cover books she buys, if they are book she plans to keep forever. She buys the jacket covers from www.vernonlibrarysupplies.com. Though you can buy them in pre-cut sheets, she found this too limiting, especially for larger books. So she just bought a 12" high, 300-foot roll for $47 plus shipping.
The math is easy... this would cover in excess of 100 large books. She also has a roll of librarian tape, and she tapes only to the jacket cover, not to the original dust jacket or book.

If you just have just one dust jacket you would like covered, you might directly approach the owner of a used/rare book shop. A couple years ago I took in a book to one shop to ask if I could buy a single jacket cover. He charged me $1, then offered to cover my dust jacket for me. Since he does this all day, he did a quick, and much better job, than I would have done myself.

You could buy clear Contact paper and do this yourself

My daughter does cover her new-purchased paperbacks with contact paper, to protect them and make them last longer. However, I think it would be difficult to cover a big paper jacket with contact paper. If you don't get it on right the first time, the paper jacket is ruined.
