One Man's Trash is Another One's Treasure (Freecycle)

Submitted by: Patty McGuire  06/18/2009 8:17 PM

The Freecycle Network - google it!!!

A very strong group of people that set up a network to help the environment by keeping almost brand new things out of landfills. Just put in your zip code and whatever, yes whatever you are looking for or what you would like to get picked up or bless some one with and its 100 percent free. Check it out!!!Great way to shop.

Hope this helps someone.

In our area we're having A LOT of trouble with people actually showing up to pick up the stuff they said they wanted for free. There was recently about six consecutive people complaining that this was a problem (people had rearranged their life to give away stuff, only to have the people not show up). Some frustrated people have switched to offering free stuff on craig's list.

I myself had had problems with connecting with folks who wanted my stuff. So I no longer post offerings, nd just drop stuff at my local thrift shop.

So now I just check in to freecycle see if someone happens to be giving away something I wanted. I have gotten stuff. My picture albums are 3.5 x 5, which is a hard size to find replacement sleeves for now. I got several used and emptied albums, for the replacement sleeves.

Also prior to Christmas I realized my old turntable was dead, so sniff, no listening to old Christmas LPs. I posted a wanted ad, and someone gave me an all-in-one system (turntable, receiver, tape deck) in perfect condition. Not expensive, but we don't need it much.

So I have gotten a few things. I have posted for many things and not gotten responses. I think the site is only as good as the local group of people. Regularly check out the free listings in Craig's lists, and in local swap magazines.

I just went there and it is hard to understand where to go and where look for stuff or to give stuff. I even signed up for a local group thinking that would help but not luck. Is normal?

I signed up for our local freecylce and it buried me in emails - hundreds of them. I guess I need to figure out a way to check in and offer stuff or seek needed stuff without getting buried under emails. (too much of a good thing? LOL)
