Does My Car Qualify for Cash for Clunkers?

Submitted by: Ray @ Tip Hero  06/18/2009 11:14 PM

Congress just passed the "Cash for Clunkers" program which offers government incentives to trade-in older gas guzzlers for new more energy efficient vehicles. For your car or truck to qualify for the cash for clunkers government program it must meet the following criteria:

- Must have a combined MPG of 18 or less.*
- It must be in drivable condition.
- Manufactured in model year 1984 or later.
- Has been continuously insured consistent with State laws and registered to you for at least one year immediately prior to trade-in.

* Combined MPG is a blend of highway and city MPG. To determine your cars combined MPG you can look it up at: fueleconomy.gov

How Much Does My Clunker Qualify For:

Under the program owners could get vouchers starting at $3,500 if they trade-in a vehicle that gets 18 mpg or less for a new vehicle that gets 22 mpg or better. The incentive grows to $4,500 if they trade in their 18 mpg or less vehicle for a new vehicle that gets 10 or more mpg over their old vehicle.

When Does Cash for Clunkers Start:

It was just passed by Congress on June 18, 2009 and is headed to the White House for signature by the President. Once signed by the President it is estimated to take up to 30 days for the Department of Transportation to get the program up and running so we are looking at early August as a start date.

My parents have been waiting to take advantage of the new Cash for Clunkers legislation. They have a 1994 Chrysler LHS that they are looking to trade-in on a new car. Unfortunately, when we looked up the combined MPG for the LHS it came to 19, just 1 mpg over the requirement. ugh!!

I don't qualify because my car already gets good gas mileage.

I have a feeling dealers are going to automatically increase prices because of the increased demand (artificial) for lower MPG cars. So the thousands of savings from this bill for consumers is not entirely accurate. The demand will increase prices and you'll get a voucher from increased prices. I'm certain some markets you'll come out even as if they never offered this voucher. It is poorly written legislation.

Jordan, I was just discussing with my Dad last night that I thought dealers would raise the price of cars, or more likely give people less of a discount if they are using the cash for clunkers program.

When Ebay was running a 20% cashback program through Live.com the sellers on Ebay simply raised their prices. We'll see what the dealers do.

I think the trick to this (unless something is written in the legislation) is going to be those that play the best deal for the vehicle they are purchasing and then once they get that amount in writing, throw in the clunker. Bring it up beforehand and you'll surely be getting much of nothing for your trade-in.

Why can we just trade in all our cars for better one?It would save on gas,,and the environment.

I'm guessing this voucher is only good toward the purchase of a new car? I would love to be able to apply that voucher to my current one year old car!!!

I looked up the info on the govs website for both our cars...both are over 20 yrs and over 165000 miles...I have always checked our mpg with each tankful (I don't trust gas gauges...ran out of gas too many times with prior cars) Their site was SEVERAL mpg under what we actually get in real-life driving...Like most gov info I think its a bunch of #$%&.

The average MPG listed for my car 2001 Grand AM are much higher than what I actually get. So does the estimate void my ability to qualify?

Does this mean BRAND-new cars or just a new to me vehicle?

I am not sure why someone would think that they would be getting next to nothing as a trade in allowance for their clunker. The dealers are not taking these cars in on trade. The government insists that these vehicles be junked and sold as scrap metal.

You get nothing for the car as a trade in, but you do receive the $3,500-$4,500 stimulus money as a credit on your purchase. Once again, these cars are not trade ins that have any value over and above the government money.

My daily drive and commuter ( 100 ) miles round trip per day is a 1980 chevy custom deluxe c10 long bed fleetside truck and it is on it's last leg and a GAS GUZZLER DELUXE !!! It smokes like a train when I first start it in the morning for about 5 minutes then runs clean enough to pass smog ...THE MORAL TO MY STORY IS IT DOES NOT QUALIFY !!!!! BECAUSE IT'S TO OLD ????? I HAVE OWNED AND DRIVEN THIS TRUCK FOR 10 YEARS PLUS CONTINOUSLY INSURED AND REGISTERED !!!!!
I FEEL THIS IS A TERRIBLY WRITTEN BILL AND IF THE GOVERNMENT CAN'T GET CASH FOR CLUNKERS RIGHT HOW ARE THEY GONNA MANAGE HEALTH CARE REFORM !!!???
