Watch Out For Grant Scams

Submitted by: Lisa from Naples, NY  06/28/2009 2:35 PM

I just want to alert everyone of the internet scams. Do not under any circumstance believe that you will get something for nothing. I have tried the Google business opportunities, I have tried the "get government grants for free!" sites; not one of them have come without a catch. I learned, too late most of the time, that in order to get the packets and deals, you need to "just pay for postage!" you pay for the $1.95 postage, then seven to ten days later you get slapped with a $60-80 dollar debit from your credit card or bank account. You wonder why.

Look back at all the Terms and Conditions, then you find that these companies will automatically debit your account if they do not hear from you in a short time period. And don't always think you can cancel these that easily either. I tried one grant "scheme", tried to call and cancel and the company had a "bad connection" the first time, the second they put me on hold for 15 minutes and I had to hang up. I kept trying for two days to talk to someone, they either hung up on me or kept me on hold. Then of course, the weekend, they are closed but it still counts as days of the term.

I wish there were some real way to find grants that would help me get on my feet; however, in this day and age, there isn't anything for nothing. Even the surveys from "free stuff" ads. You HAVE to answer something or you don't make it through the ad to get the free items. One ad said to check the "no thanks" box if you didn't want information on some drug survey. There wasn't any box. I would have had to name some drug to go on. I tried and the ad said, "not showing up on our data file; check your spelling". I tried several well-known drugs. None on their data file. Just goes to show you, you can't get anything for nothing.

Ironically, the very scams you are warning about are listed in the Google ads to the upper right of this page.

I went through the same thing you did and on the same scams. Took me forever to get out of them. One kept taking money from my debit bank account even after they were supposed to have stopped, and the only way to stop them was to change bank account numbers.

I managed to recover some money by telling them I was going to make a consumer complaint with the state attorney general. I should still pursue it. I want all my money back. I am disabled on a low fixed income

That happened to Me with a pay for shipping thing, I didn't notice for 2 months that they had taken money out. I called my bank, and they got my money back. :)
