Make Clothes Last Longer (marthastewart.com)

Submitted by: KReed  07/09/2009 9:04 AM

Picked this tip up on MarthaStewart.com - had no idea that you were supposed to snap up clothes before laundering..... Here is her advice for longer lasting clothes, and coincidentally lower utility costs.

prepare your clothes for the washer by closing zippers, fastening hooks, and turning items inside out. Wash darks together using the cold-water cycle so they don't bleed onto lighter clothes -- and cold water is crucial, since it lowers your water-heating costs. Line-drying dark items will also help maintain their original appearance -- and you'll save on heating costs of the dryer.

I dry everything but towels, sheets, socks, and heavy sweatshirt on racks or in the bathroom. I'm sure it saves on energy, but, more importantly, it prolongs the life of the clothing. I use a small amount of fabric softener when washing cottons to avoid too-stiff cotton t-shirts.

I wash everything inside out except the really dirty ones.

I've always heard that hooking up a bra before washing it helps and will keep other items from getting snagged and never dry a bra in the dryer. I heard the dryer will break it down and it won't wear as long.
