Update Your Jewelry Box for Less

Submitted by: designermavin  07/12/2009 3:11 PM

One of the hottest trends right now (see Lanvin, Yves Saint Laurent, J.Crew, Vera Wang) is big chunky vintage looking necklaces and necklaces tied with ribbons instead of clasps.

Here are a couple of easy ways to steal this look for a lot less:

1) Scour flea markets, antique stores, and thrift stores for chunky vintage pieces (probably what J.Crew did to come up with their designs in the first place)

2) Make your own. Take necklaces from your jewelry box or thrift store finds and tie a basic ribbon through the clasps. Or mix a beaded bracelet with a gold chain necklace, just clasp them together and voila, your own limited edition $150 necklace.

One problem I always have is losing earrings, I have several single earrings missing their mate. Instead of buying a different style of earring, I purchased the same style (size, shape, color, stone, cut) to make a set of three. When I lose another earring I'll still have a set to wear.

Also, I've noticed that most women have a ton of jewelry, but wear only a few pieces. I suppose the 80/20 rule is in play here. Consider going through your existing jewelry collection and using the pieces you already have.
