Awesome idea - saves money and sticks it to the man.

I bring empty reusable water containers, like Rubbermaid sippers for the kids, and Camelback sippers for me. The sippers help prevent spills on the plane with the kids, and then we can fill them for all the car trips and sightseeing when we get to the destination.

I was able to save at least $100+ off my bar tab at the end of a 7 day cruise by bringing a 2 quart plastic pitcher/container w/ a lid and sugarfree koolaid (crystal lite, etc.) packs and made flavored drinks in my cabin. Since you are provided w/ small glasses and a bucket of ice twice a day, it was easy for me and my daughter to slip into our room for a quick refill and walk around w/our drink. At dinner, we drank ice tea, coffee or water which are free. Since soft drinks are pricy and I only splurged once for us and I don't drink alcohol, my tab was only $6 for the week. It was easy to overhear the amt. of other passengers tabs, which averaged between $600 - $700 (obviously alcholic drinks were consumed - cruise ships make big profits are alcolhol and gambling, which they promote constantly, so it pays to have a strong will if you are on a tight budget).

Another thing I did on cruises was make ice coffee. Coffee is available all the time in the cafeteria. Ice, creamer, sweeteners, straws. Perfect iced coffee.

While you're at it, bring your own food, too--a sack lunch that you can slip into your carry-on. Take only solid foods, like a sandwich or a piece of fruit--nothing with a sauce that might be labeled a "liquid" at security (and might also leak out onto your clothing). Flights nowadays almost never include a meal, and the prices for food at the airport concessions are ludicrous.

Iced tea is another thing you can make on a cruise if you bring tea bags as hot water is readily available via microwave. I always bring tea bags on a trip--iced Earl Grey is a very tasty beverage.

Great posts! Why didn't I think of the empty bottle? Paying for water makes no sense to me.

Friends wanting to save on a cruise took empty water bottles into port, filled it with gin and back to the ship they went. Many cruise lines confiscate port purchased bottles of alcohol, returning it to you when you're disembarking at home.

When we went on our cruises we took 12pks of soda with us my cousin had one suitcase full of 12pks of beer and soda. You can put the soda in the sink and the bring you ice... Another thing we did was at dinner we asked our waiter if he could add the sugar to the tea before he brought it to our table since the sugar won't disolve in cold tea. He was more than happy to do that for us.

I tried this the last time I flew, but once you get past security at the San Francisco airport there aren't any water fountains.
