Skip the Electrician, Easy DIY Light Switch

Submitted by: ezstreet  07/15/2009 1:42 PM

We live in an old house with horse hair and lathing. we even have the nubs where old gas lights used to be. Suffice to say the wiring in the house is pretty old.

The overhead light fixture in the living room didn't have a switch, just a pull chain to turn the light on. We considered hiring an electrician to wire it, but when we heard it was going to cost over $300 to install the wiring, feeding it through the ceiling and install a switch, we canned that idea.

Then we heard about a wireless switch that solved all of our problems. You get a base that you screw into the socket and then you just hang the battery operated switch on the wall for an instant light switch - no holes or wiring needed! all for 2o bucks at amazon and now we don't have to stumble to the middle of the room to turn on the light.

My reply is that to reap your true savings, use rechargeable batteries and a recharger. Otherwise you're still spending that $300 over a longer period of time. Also, as a safety measure, your wiring might need updating to copper. But I'm not an electrician.

I'm an Electrician.

We aren't out to rob you. The $300 is more than fair, it will be installed safely.

Like all tradesmen, we conform to a Code that protects the safety of the public.

Will you sue Amazon when your chicken coop tinderbox burns down?

Good luck with that.

I'm am electrician also and I don't see anything wrong with your solution. I do agree, $300 is a fair price. Especially if it's a bid price, covering materials and labor to do the job. It's a fair price for a skilled trade. No one should be scared off this solution for fear of burning down their house. This is a far better alternative than than having an unqualified person put in a switch not following code for a lesser price, to save money. Absolutely, saving money is more than always going the cheapest way.
