Household Items Can Make the Best Toys

Submitted by: grammaj  05/17/2008 3:41 PM

For risk of sounding like a "well back in my day"...I really think that kids have too many toys. I find that my grandkids are more interested in playing with unconvential toys then the one's I buy for them. For example, letting them play in the tupperware drawer could entertain them for hours. A few beans locked in a small tupperware makes a great noisemaker--add a wooden spoon and you are all set. I have spent hours with a deck of cards and a 1 year old--they love them. Ultimately kids don't need all those kid toys, you just need to be a little creative. Just because toys are cheap, doesn't mean we need to buy so many.

Just make sure you don't include pots and pans in the household items to play with. I have seen many times that babies love the noise when banging the metal lids together and hitting the pots with a wooden spoon, but what happens when the "toys" they've played with many times are on the stove with boiling water in them? to a 1 year old, they will still look like fun.

Great point about the pots and pans-I never thought about that. Last weekend, my 1 year old and 3 year old niece came to town and I entertained them during a rainy two days with a cardboard box, a box of crayons, scrap paper, a deck of cards, an office chair, a box of silk ribbons, costume jewelry, magazines and a blow up air mattress. We had a great time and they never touched the bag of toys they brought with them. I just made sure to supervise closely.

My kids love to play with all the pots and pans in our house, and I don't see any harm in it. I think the bigger issue there is leaving anything that's cooking on the stove unattended. Not a good idea, whether there's toddlers around or not!

My kids love when I give them cardboard boxes and a box of crayons. They get so creative, turn the big cardboard boxes into cars by coloring wheels, doors and headlights on the box then sitting in them and coloring the insides of the box!
