Books. Not only can you find bargains at stores like Goodwill, but also on Amazon and Ebay. Even with shipping, quality books can found at substantially lower costs.

I'm a second-hand store believer. I rarely buy anything new whether it be clothing, shoes (disinfect with Lysol), jewelry, household items/decorations.
Also, with the exception of the Harry Potter series, I haven't bought new books in years. I have a library card. If your library doesn't yet have a new book you want listed, you can request that they order it. You may have to wait your turn on the "request" list, but again, it doesn't cost anything.
Also, my law firm has a "book center" where anyone can donate a book for us to borrow. We simply borrow and return. I've been considering starting a puzzle swap too.

Yes, thrift stores, as the previous commenter noted: Specifically, crockpots; coffee makers; school supplies; cups, mugs, plates, and other dishes; ordinary vases, picture frames; sheets; bicycles; bath towels; small zippered cases, and purses, are in surplus in most thrift stores.
Also: Pets of all kinds. Not just puppies, but cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, pet rats, iguanas, and many other creatures are surrendered to the SPCA and are available for adoption at a nominal fee. Horses! The government auctions off mustangs on a regular basis, and with patience and time these can be trained to be great riding horses. And, many well-trained horses are available cheap or free at this time; due to the failing economy, people can't afford to feed or board them.

Legos. Sets never remain intact and you can find great deals at yard sales. Parents get sick of picking little things off the floor, dump them in a bag and sell them cheap. Wash them in hot soapy water, drain them in a colander, and let them air dry.

Vehicles, I'm surprised this was not on the either list. The reason is that new cars go down in value by about 30% almost as soon as you drive it off the lot.
A two year old vehicle is still under warranty and is more likely to retain it's value. Do listen to either Clark Howard or Dave Ramsey? This is a big one on both radio shows.
Plus, you don't need a new car to drive in the garden.

Decorate your house from yard sales and flea markets. Here's a tip about indoor flea markets:
We searched out and only bought from the ones closing a booth. All items were 1/2 off or more. My kitchen is roosters and hens. I have found a large teapot, cups, bar stool cushions, clocks, candle holders, fridg. magnets, tons of figurines and even wind chimes. All roosters and hens and all purchased at yard sales and flea markets. Each room in my house has a different theme and decorated with things bought at yard sales and flea markets. I'm busy finding treasures for my kids and grankids. Soooooo much fun!!!!!!!!!!
