Don't Throw Food Away

Submitted by: Gale Osborn  07/22/2009 6:05 PM

A couple of summers ago I had two freezers and they were full. Then they went out!!!!!! Both a few days apart.

The fruit crop was the best it had been in years due to the wonderful rains we had that elimated our drought here in North Texas. We had picked wild grapes and wild plums on our property. Our peach trees had made and our friends gave us pears, peaches and plums for the picking. I had 7 pkgs. of ten lb leg quarters and lots of beef, pork and ribs.

My sister and my friend came over and we got to work. Thank God I had lots of canning jars and lids. We put the meat in coolers to do next day and started on the fruit. The jars went into the dish washer and the fruit was heated to boiling and canned. My canner will hold 14 qts at a time. By evening we had the fruit all done.

Next day I put all the beef, pork and ribs to cook all together in roasting pans including my electric turkey cooker. We removed all the bones and fat and canned it. Next day I put the chicken in my big pot (40 qts.) and covered with water and added chicken bouillon and onions. With most of the selves out, the pan fit in my refrigerator. Next morning removed the fat and bones and the meat went into pint jars and broth in qt jars.

Are you tired yet?????? Point is I saved my food. Tip Hero encourages people to share experiences and I have more than a few!!!!

Ok, Laura, here goes. First, take charge of your money. How much do you have to spend on food ? How many do you feed regularly? What foods do they like? What is nutrisious?

Gather all your sales food papers. Join the stores on line E-mail list,as Dollar General, CVS, Kroger,(ETC). Join all the coupon sites to get on line coupons. Be careful if it sounds too good to be true, it is. See if you can locate a newspaper boy and ask for all the left over Sunday papers, for the coupons. I have a friend who gets them out of the trash can at the post office.Make a list and stick to it unless a huge savings on something everyone likes.Learn the basic prices of most foods. Is there a 99 cent store close by? I get really good produce there, sometimes. There's lots of ways to store food that is basicly free,as, plastic containers, jars and bags and cartons that food come in.Bread bags are great for freezing and storing, blow in them to see if they're air tight. Save all pieces of breads, dry them out to crush them.( Season if you like) I think the biggest money saver is to cook. Prepared foods are not healthy and much more expensive. When you make it yourself, you know what's in it! Buy your spices at Big Lots and the Dollar Store or 99 cent store. Read up and learn the use of each spice and make up your own mixes. All the recipes are on line. For baking mix to make pancakes and biscuits or anything calling for baking mix use a 5 lbs bag of self-rising flour and 2 cups shortening. Cost about $3.00 and makes twice the amount of packaged. If the wheather is hot, store in fridg. Allways buy when your coupon idem is on sale. This way you can get lots of things free. When a vegetable we like is on sale I buy in bulk and take it home and blance it and freeze. This all takes some time and for-thought but really works. I also buy Angel Food, make my own soap and laundry soap and fabric softener. Sure hope all this will helps you. Number one thing don't be discouraged. Get excited about how you can beat the odds and make it!!!!!!! If you have other questions, just ask and search out all the tips on this site. Gale
