Swapping houses is a great way to experience a new place without dropping a ton of money. When I was a kid my parents swapped houses with a woman that my mother met at a conference who lived in Germany and wanted to travel in the states. It was great because we got to live in a small town in Germany and really get a chance to know it and truly experience the culture (also helped that we were there when Germany won the world cup!!! amazing.)
Of course you will have more luck with house swaps if you live in a desirable location like in a big city or on the coast or in a resort town, but still worth a try.
If you don't know anyone interested in swapping houses, there are a few sites on the web to help facilitate swaps:
HomeExchange.com - this does require a yearly membership fee starting at $50/year. A steep price, but worth it if you can make a match.
Home Base Holidays - also requires a paid membership, this is a London based company, but they do have listings in the US as well as dozens of other countries.
HomeLink International - another subscription based house swap match service.
Intervac.com - yet another subscription based service.
Craigslist.org - check the house swap section, this might be a little tedious b/c you'll have to search several different cities looking for swaps, but at least you can narrow it down by searching only the cities you are interested in visiting.
