Stretching a Can of Cat Food

Submitted by: Linda Vetter  07/23/2009 11:15 PM

We buy a good dry cat food and put some in the blender and make it kind of grainy. Put it in a fairly large bowl, then put a can of moist food in the blender with some water and blend till soupy. Then mix the dry with the soupy mix and stir together and serve. You have to experiment with the amounts and how many you have to feed. We feed a lot of strays so they aren't too picky while our inside ones will only eat it with more can food in it. Make the change gradually and they usually adapt to it.I give them plain dry food extra. Linda Vetter

We've always fed cats dry food. But our one elderly cat was getting real scrawny, and I realized he didn't like the dry food. For a few weeks I bought him some canned food, but then got to thinking "enough already with the cans." Now I just give him dry food softened with water and he is happy with that.

Gee, wonder, Maybe we could put your next steak in a blender and water it down. You need to talk to your vet (do you have one?) about what your cats need at their age, life and condition. As my male cat got older I was advised to give him wet food. I was also advised that alot of dry, grocery, cat food, would result in him having crystals that caused blockage. I guess you buy the cheapest food too. Maybe real problem is if you have a male cat prone to uninary tract infections. at this junction, maybe your concern needs to be about his health and not what he is content with. My cats, before brought indoors, thought rats and diseased birds were "ok." I am not trying to be hateful but I have almost lost my beautiful 14 year old male cat because of "wrong" feeding. If you love your cat as much as I do take the cat to the vet. We went through several trials before we discovered what "right." Your cat is eating the "wet" food because he needs the water but depending on the brand and the compsosition you may be creating crystal problems that block his uninary tract. Please take the baby to the vet. Please take this letter.

Although I think what you said is correct about mixing the food with water, I think it could have been said in a little more tactful manner. You said you almost lost a cat due to improper feeding. So you actually feed your cat incorrectly, but then you speak with such insulting comments to someone who you say you are just trying to help.
