4 Ways to Save on Cruises

Submitted by: Rivi  07/28/2009 9:51 PM

1. Skip the specialty restaurants that charge a cover charge. I've always found the food in the main dining rooms delicious. I think the cover charges are a waste of money, and it encourages cruise lines to charge for food that used to be included in the price.

2. I avoid the alcohol completely - unless it's free. Some cruises will provide free champagne at art auctions, upon embarkation, and past-members special cocktail parties.

3. Because cruise fares have been so discounted lately, cruise lines make their money through gambling, bingo, alcohol, onboard shopping, art auctions and shore excursions. Keep this in mind when spending money onboard.

4. Depending on the country, it may be wise to pay extra for the shore excurson through the cruse line. When booked through the cruise line, if the shore excursion runs late, the ship MUST wait for you. (This has happened to me on two different cruises). This piece of mind may be worth the extra cost - ESPECIALLY in undeveloped countries!

Carnival Cruise Lines will let you carry on board up to a case of soft drinks. No need to pay their outrageous prices for a soda. I also make cold brew tea in my cabin. Just bag up a cup of sugar for each pitcher. Their on board tea is awful.

I also skip the soft drinks. On Norwegian Cruise Lines, juice is always included wth breakfast. At all other times, coffee, tea (including herbal in tea bags) water and unsweetened iced tea (add a packet of sugar or sweetener) are available. With those options, I happily forgo outrageously priced soda pop for a week!

Pack some zip-lock bags and a small cooler in your luggage. We ordered room service before an excursion and packed up our lunch to have as a picnic on the beach. I've paid for all the food on board, plus I don't have to worry about finding a clean restaurant during the excursion.

Another tip for cruises is to pack an over-the-door plastic shoe holder. The bathrooms in a cruise ship cabin are incredibly tiny, so hang your shoeholder over the door and put in all of your sunscreens, hairspray, brushes, etc...Easy to see what you have, the tiny counter isn't cluttered, easy to tidy up. I even use shoe holders at home for organizing cleaning supplies.
