Read this great article in self magazine 20 Ways to Eat Healthier Right Now, it definitely helped me put my diet into perspective and had some helpful tips for getting healthy this summer:
- Eat Like a Tourist in Greece – this means lots of grilled fish and veggies, wime, mmm, and
- If you can’t grow it, don’t eat it – not sure about this one, but did get me thinking about where my food comes from and that the less processed the food is, the better it is for you. Think of it as cutting out the middle mean, the closer you are to your food source, the better.
- Read the back of the box first – ignore the advertising and direct your attention to the ingredients to really understand what a product is all about
- The crunchier, the better, crunchy snacks are more satisfying, which means you will eat less of them and satisfy your hunger faster
- You can always have more…. tomorrow – words I need to live by, it tastes so good right away you just want more, but why not savor a few bites and save the rest for tomorrow?
- A frozen berry beats a fresh donut – similar to #2, fresh is better
- You can’t replace real ice cream – go ahead splurge a little bit on the real deal and you might obsess about it less. (Although, in my estimation you can replace real ice cream, edy’s rich and creamy yogurt blends are amazing and taste just as good if not better than the real thing!)
- There’s no fruit in fruit flavor – again read the labels, some words can be deceiving. What is natural (ie bacon fat) is not always good for you
- If it’s not around you can’t eat it – working from home has been deadly, the pantry is always available. A lot can be said for out of sight out of mind!!
- Table your meals – no shocker here, eating in front of the tv or on the go is not good for the diet, keep your attention focused on your meal.
- Judge food by its cover – again, 2 & 9, the less packaging the less processing the better for you
- Cake’s just not that into you – sweets always leave you wanting more
- Don’t drink dessert – soda packs more sweeteners than most desserts! Same goes for sweetened coffee and teas, drinks can be hidden with all sorts of calories
- Make sure you can ID the animal – star shaped nuggets as are not the way; nature intended, the simpler the meat, the better for you
- Fuel up in the morning not at night_ self explanatory
- Don’t’ buy food where you buy tires – all in one shopping does not always have the most healthy options
- Work for your dinner – I have started preparing more foods from scratch taking the time to dress up basic tacos with homemade guacamole and salsa, sure makes a difference and makes you feel like you are really treating yourself. So much more satisfying. See the Slow Food movement…
- Your hips are not a fridge - meaning you don't have to clean your plate - learn to 'hear' when your belly is full to avoid overeating.
- Watching top chef isn’t cooking – take cues from the pros
- Cut yourself a break - it’s okay to give into indulgence every once in a while enjoy it, don’t berate yourself.
