Finding Volunteer Vacations

Submitted by: gingaroo  08/03/2009 9:15 PM

In college, I spent a summer in Mexico studying the water quality of Magdalena bay, it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, for a month and college credit I spent $2000 for room and board. It was completely worth it, I felt I made a contribution to help preserving one of the most beautiful places on the planet. And it gave me the unique opportunity to really immerse myself in the place in the culture.

I have been on a couple of volunteer vacations, and am happy to see my money go to non-profits as opposed to big resorts. And yes, it is nice to go on a relaxing vacation occassionally, but I have loved my volunteer vacations, the friends I have made and all that I have learned has been invaluable.

Here are some of the sites that I've used to find volunteer opportunities, yes, some are pricey, but I usually can find several that fit my budget:

Earthwatch.org, sierraclub.org, habitat for humanity, reefrelief.org, wwwoof.org (for organic framing trips, globalvolunteers.org, amizade.org, volunteeraboad.com.

Am sure there are a lot more out there. Would love to hear about other people's experiences with volunteer vacations.

Young people looking for a career should consider farming. One of the best ways to find out about it is the sign up for wwoof. The Australia chapter is espcecially popular. Much of the fruit in Australia is picked by the Japanese who are wwoof members. It is a great way to learn English. How it works is that you buy the book that lists 1500 farms/sheep stations. You get a small insurance policy that covers any accidents on the farms. In return you work 4-6 hours a day and your roonm and board is free. Check out the Australian web site.

America has a huge shortage of farmers who are the basis of our civilization.
BTW, do you think American farmers and their employees have health insurance? Think again.
