Inexpensive Dinnerware

Submitted by: frugalgramma  08/03/2009 11:19 PM

To replenish our supply of everyday plates, cups & bowls at an affordable price, I frequent local thrift stores and purchase sturdy pieces I find that are a solid ivory white color, and in really good or new condition. The pieces usually have some sort of pretty embossed design along the edges (fruit, leaves, swirls, even snowflakes), but they blend well with each other on the table because they are all the same color.

We decorate our home for the different seasons and holidays and the ivory white mixes well with any color scheme and decor.

I chose the ivory white because I wanted something to go with our original set that has the ivory white background with retro hand-painted flowers on it, a family hand-me-down that we love, but has suffered some breakage over the years of use. However, any color of your choice to go with pieces you already have, can be used to build upon your set.

Be patient because some visits to the thrift stores yield only a piece or two at a time. Sometimes, however, like recently, I found a set of 9 matching Pfaltzgraff ivory oversized coffee cups, that I can easily use without saucers because they are about the size of a mug. They were only $.39 each. Plates usually run about $.59 - $.99 each. Bowls in good condition are a little harder to come by, but can be found if you keep your eyes open. Flea markets and garage sales are also good places to look.

We are lucky enough to have a set of good china (another family hand-me-down), but the same concept could be used to build yourself a set of china if you wanted to. Different patterns of the same color family would look pretty on the table if you appreciate an eclectic approach. The possibilities are endless.

love mix and match dishware. I've even been able to find matches for my aunt's collectible franciscan pottery dishware at my local thrift store paying $5 for a dozen pieces instead of $20/plate!

I just bought dishes at Old Time Pottery on clearance! $1.00 for plates, $.50 for small plates and bowls. They don't all match, but I bought them in complimentary neutral colors and they look beautiful together! Kind of the same concept as thrift shopping, but these are brand new!

For casual use, I use glass jars (salsa, sauce, pickles, etc.) as drinking glasses. I'm very clumsy, and these jars are tough to break!

Try restaurant supply stores--they carry very inexpensive and tough to break dishes.
