An addition to this tip: fruit flies breed in drains, so if you pour a little bleach down your sinks at night you can help control them that way too.

Wash your fruit when you get it home, including bananas. Just regular dish soap and dry off.

Are fruit flies the same as gnats that get in your houseplants?

I use fruit-flavored vodka, a piece of paper, and one of those taller, thin shot glasses. Put a small amount of vodka in the shot glass. Roll the paper into a cone with the narrow tip inside the shot glass. Position the cone such that the paper is just above - but not touching! - the vodka. Depending on how many flies you have and how big your kitchen is, you will want to made 2-4 of these and place them around the kitchen.

I actually don't even cover the glass with saran wrap and find it works better. I also add a small amount of water so that the surface tension is broken. I find that it works best if you change the solution (vinegar, water, soap, ) often and if its not working well add a piece of fruit to the mix!
