4 Ways to Save on a Major Move

Submitted by: corporategypsy  08/06/2009 5:53 PM

Having been an Army wife for 4 years, then a corporate gypsy for 4 house moves over the past 10 years, I have a few comments on how to save on moving costs.

Many of the comments I've read sound like short-distance local moves. Here are some ideas if you find yourself facing a cross-country or cross-state move.

1. If you are moving for a new job, try and negotiate a good moving package before accepting the job. It's possible the company hiring you will pay some or all of your moving expenses; one time they even paid our closing fees at the new location. It never hurts to ask...of course, the tougher the economy, the leaner the perks, so this may not be an option.

2. If you are the one paying for the move, be sure to get several bids from moving companies. Ask if there is a price discount if you pay in cash...we moved once on our dime, and saved a bundle by packing our own boxes rather than have the moving company pack them (many corporate moving packages include this service...which costs a fortune!)The company we hired provided the boxes and packing materials in the quoted price (it was only about $175...for unlimited specialty boxes, wardrobe boxes, etc. and was well worth it considering how much it easier it made packing)

3. Look into using PODS--these are portable storage crates that are dropped off in your driveway. You can pack it at your leisure...then if you don't have a place to move into at the other end (yet) it's cheaper to pay for storage. Unlike a moving company, which charges outrageous fees if they have to unload the truck, store the items, and then reload the truck again.

4. If you don't use it, or absolutely love it, then GET RID OF IT! Don't pay good money to transport a bunch of junk.

we used pods... i will never use them again.

once they drop it off.. you pay 250 for the dropp off. they said we can fill to the top and from front to back. we did that.

called them to pick up. they charged for the pickup another 200. then the man said it was too heavy and they had to take it to the yard for weighing. called us back saying the box was 1500 pounds over weight. and we had to go to the yard and take half of it out of the box to another box. and they were going to charge us for the additional box plus the one it was originally in. i fought them. finding out the truth from the driver. that it was only 500 pounds over their weight. and he talked to the manager whom told him not to drive it to our home. but he did anyway. took that risk and saved us money too.
but to drop it off he did. but then they also charge you once you unloaded the box. they charge you again for them to pick it up and move. again the 250.
all in all. we paid 700 for the move.
the website is not trust worthy. you call the line and they too are not trust worthy.

wont advise in it.

yes it was convenitent to be able to pack it in a slow pace on your own time with out being hurried.

but i now say use uhaul or such if doing on your own.

We have moved across the country to a rental before closing on a house in Nov. We bought and packed our own boxes and moved them ourselves in our Murano since our new house was only 10 miles away. I got 2 men and a truck. The two guys are about $91 an hour and they loaded the heavy furniture and wrapped everything in blankets. I had 19 heavy pieces of furniture loaded in less than two hours and they even finished getting all of our garage nick knacks. Loaded the truck expertly and unloaded in 1 hour. Highly recommended and the total for them was only $500 so we got to tip them big time. Total time 3.5 hours.
