Cell Phones: New $100 plans

Submitted by: alexa003  06/06/2008 5:27 PM

I learned my lesson with a $350 phone bill and since have switched to the new $100 plan offered by verizon--some of the other major cell companies offer similar deals. You get unlimited minutes and includes long-distance calling as well. While you may pay more than you need some months, if you’re at all a heavy user of your phone, it’s worth it to avoid having to pay extra for minutes outside of your calling plan.

best thing yet... this is a combination you have to figure out how to best work...

you need high-speed CABLE not dsl not satellite PLUS you need a magic jack (magicjack.com).

you pay your monthly cable bill, getting high-speed access (should be under $50 a month) and the magic jack apparatus costs $50 one-time spend. you plug the magic jack into your pc usb port and plug your land-line phone into the other end of the magic jack.

all your calls to the US and canada are free. on your annual anniversary date you pay only a fee to keep using the apparatus -- a cost of about $20 to 30 annually -- NOT monthly.

there you have it. if you even had to pay $50 a year for magic jack, it would be less than $5 a month. so averaging costs monthly, you get unlimited phone service PLUS high-speed internet for $55 a month. that's probably less than what you're paying now. the only catch is this...

if your net goes down, what do you do? you turn to your handy-dandy VIRGIN MOBILE -- $10 a month plus $0.10 a minute. you have that emergency backup. don't use it unless you MUST, cos $0.10 a minute really adds up. $10 a month just for a great little pocket watch, alarm clock and emergency backup phone is nothing at all.

If you get unlimited minutes and plan includes long distance calling as well, why would you have to pay more than $100 Verizon Plan some months?

He means that under the old plan, you might not have always used $100 worth of minutes...but in high usage months, he's assured that he's "capped" his bill at $100.

I switched to Sprint's $100 a month because I have a teenager. The plan includes unlimited everything and I could not be happier. The surcharges, overages, picture mail, email was creating a lot of problems for her and my wallet.

When did $100 per month for phone service become the budget option? Of all these phone minutes, how many were really for essential phone calls, and how many were for entertainment????
When my teenagers started driving, and would sometimes be driving home on rural roads late at night, I wanted them to have a cell phone for emergencies. They have track phones that cost about $6 per month. The phones are not to be used for socializing.
Have your teenager get his own phone and pay for his own minutes.

How about just getting rid of it? Or get T-mobiles 10 cents per minute prepaid (with no other charges involved) for emergencies. My cell phone costs me $100 per year max. I always laugh when people tell me a cell phone is necessary...since a few years ago none of us had them. I'm a NYC businessperson and live totally fine without it, without inconvenience. If people need me, they can always reach me at work or home and I check my messages on the answering machine.
