A lot of people are not aware that you can freeze milk and, when you thaw it out, there is no change in taste or consistency. I started doing this years ago because I frequently ended up without any milk for my tea. I know fat free, 1% and 2% freeze & reconstitute fine. I think regular full fat milk also is OK but it's so long since I used regular milk, I just don't recall one way or the other.

If the milk is frozen do you still have to use it within a day of expiration after thawing it?
I am not familiar w/ freezing and we use 2% - it gets expensive w/ 5 kids so any time I can buy many gallons while on sale it will be nice. Thx!

I drink mostly reconsituted dry milk and when I have to travel for a few days, I just set the (plastic) pitcher in the freezer. When I get home, the thaws overnight on the counter, is still cold in the morning, and is otherwise just the way it was before I left. During the Great Depression my family had a friend who lived on a farm and learned to can milk, like she canned vegetables.

We've bought extra gallons of milk alot, usually when it's 'on sale' . and put them in our freezer, and have had no problems. Been doing this for years, since our kids were little. We usually buy 2% . . no you don't have to use it within a day a of expiration. . . just make sure you shake it up while it's thawing and it's fine. I usually thaw mine in a bowl or sinkful of lukewarm / or cool water . . i just did this yesterday and milk tastes fine. Our daughter - now all grown up - does this at her house all the time, and she buys 1% milk . . she learned from us! ha It sure SAVES from going to the store so often!!!!

I just bought milk the other day on sale and froze what we wouldn't use up right away. I also mix skim milk and whole milk together, then freeze it because my kids do not like skim milk but do not notice if I mix it.

My husband and I don't drink milk, but do use it on our cereal every morning. I buy a gallon and freeze about half of it for later use. I pour it into a quart canning jar, and fill it about half full, and put it in the freezer. I do shake it up, before using it, after it thaws out. Be careful not to fill the jars too full, because they might break in the freezer. I don't like to use plastic containers for storing anything anymore!

What people call an "expiration date" on dairy is NOT.. it's the "pull date", or the last day the store should sell it. It doesn't automatically go bad after that date, although it can deteriorate quite rapidly thereafter. If it's sweet (not spoiled, rancid, sour) it's safe.
