Before You Buy a Watch, Check the Battery

Submitted by: smrtshppr  08/24/2009 2:46 PM

A few years ago I bought a basic watch for about $40. Just recently the battery died and that was the first time I flipped the watch around to see how to change the battery. Turns out that you need to have a jeweler change the battery because they need a special tool to open it up.

So, I went to Ross to have them change it and found out it would cost $29 and 2 weeks to have it changed. So I just went to Macy's and bought a new watch for $30. Makes me sick that it costs about the same to buy an entirely new watch than it would to change the battery. But that's America for you. Just throw it away and buy new.

I did make sure when I bought my new watch that it was one that I could change the battery myself for the cost of about $5! So at least I'll have this one for a while. I also considered a wind up watch, but couldn't find a cheap one that I liked.

When you purchase the battery at walmart, the clerks in their jewelry department will change it for you free of charge.

Me thinks that you gave up too soon. Many places will replace the battery on the spot at no charge if you buy the battery there. Some places that you may not think about will change the battery: Costco, Walmart, K-mart, Sears, Target, J.C. Penney

yes, and if you go to a retail place called Battery Store, they TEST the battery for you before selling you a new one and putting it in while they are at it.

so handy for car fobs, hand tools, hearing aids....
