A Cheap Fabric Alternative

Submitted by: anonymous  08/26/2009 5:08 PM

Instead of buying expensive oilcloth or vinyl backed fabric for you next project, cut up flannel backed plastic tablecloths. You can get them VERY inexpensively in dimestores or even after season clearance sales in department stores.

You get at least a 60" wide fabric and depending on the size you can get several yards for only a few dollars or less. They work great for the lining when sewing your own lunchbags/boxes.

I have also used the table clothes to make training pants for my kids when they where potty training. I used old sweat shirts to the inside and the table cloth for the our side cut them out using a pair of little boys underwear that fit then added elastic to the legs and waist. You can also get cheap fabric at thrift stores not only the fabric shelf but look at the women skirts and large shirts. often you can find enough fabric to make small projects. Some skirts will have about 2 yards of usable fabric.

I make large baby bibs for new baby gifts and also if invited to a party that has a new baby, I bring one along. Great Gag gifts for adults. Most are theme related, such as Christmas, Halloween, Baseball, Golf, or whatever. Use the flannel backed vinyl table cloth part on one side and use the 100% cotton printed on the other side. Reversable with velcro snaps. These wash well and are a cheap alternative to buying new fabric. Get the table clothes on clearance after a holiday.
