Make Your Own Microwave Popcorn

Submitted by: anonymous  08/21/2009 6:15 PM

You can make microwave popcorn yourself, using a paper lunch bag. Just cover the bottom with kernels such as Orville Redenbacher's. Microwave for about 1 minute 30 seconds (your microwave will vary so practice with the timing). Take it out, being careful of the steam when you open it. If you need salt, you can spray inside the bag with Pam, then the salt will stick. Gourmet popcorn for pennies!

Editor's Note: This tip was originally submitted in response to 10 Huge Retail Rip-Offs. We felt this instructional video would be helpful in demonstrating how to do this at home (note: you will see an ad at the beginning that will last about 15-30 seconds and you may hear part of the instructional video in the background during the ad; when the ad finishes, the video starts from the beginning so you won't miss any of it):

This is great, but it is so much tastier on the stovetop! Put a little olive oil (flavored, if you want) in a pan, sprinkle in a layer of kernels, cover, and enjoy!

This is awesome. I am going to get paper bags tomorrow so that I can share this nifty thrifty money saving tip with my co-workers and friends.

Don't bother with the staples. They aren't necessary, and the paper bags can catch fire. (http://tinyurl.com/5c6one)

I tried it without any oil or salt. Also I wasn't so sure about the staple, so I just double folded the bag and set it upright in the microwave. It worked out great!

I've done this for years. I don't add any oil or salt till after it's popped. I also just double fold my bag instead of stapling. Works perfectly EVERY TIME! Plus it tastes so much better than the store bought stuff-that stuff always leaves such an unpleasant after-taste!!!

Thats great to know about the popcorn ,but how much popcorn and how long in the microwave would be nice to know too!!! And maybe a mention of which brand popcorn popped best.
Let me know - Thanks
Debbie

Rather than risk fire, go to your local thrift store and buy a used air-popper. Far healthier (no oil at all), and way safer!
