I took a chance and purchased a refurbished HP Pavilion M9350F, which eCost had on sale for $619.99. The specs on this thing are pretty unreal: a quad-core AMD processor, 6GB of RAM, a 750GB hard drive, a 512MB GeForce 9800GT graphics card, a TV tuner, and 802.11n wireless connectivity.
Although E-Cost.Com doesn't have the best of reputations, I've been pleased with this purchase. I added a 22" flat panel monitor from Costco for $149, and upgraded the power unit in the computer to a 600w unit for about $60.
I spent several months researching specs and computers before I pulled the trigger on this refurb unit. That way I knew when a great deal came along. Good luck in your search.

I've purchased items from Newegg.com in the past and will in the future. They have some great prices and wonderful service. Delivery is very quick and I've never had any problems with my purchases. Good luck.

Newegg is a reputable online seller. I have had good experience with them and I have always heard good things about them from my techie friends who order from Newegg regularly. They can have some very good deals as well (sign-up for their mailer).
If you are looking for an average computer, during this time of the back-to-school season you can get some very good deals from Staples, Best Buy and similar stores. Check the Sunday circulars and compare specifications and mail-in-rebate offers. In my opinion, the back to school season is the best time to score deals on laptops.

I've purchased one machine from Buy.com which has served me well. A friend has purchased from HP's website with good results, and I've used Newegg.com for other purchases with no problem.
I've not used TigerDirect.com but they sell computers, both new and reconditioned, for good prices.

I've bought 2 computers from TigerDirect and 3 monitors. Always on time, low price, and good quality. NewEgg is good as well, but I normally use them for component purchases (e.g. video cards, memory sticks, etc.)

I have used NewEgg on a few occasions - stuff came quickly, freight free, in good condition, products worked well
Oh, yes, the price was quite right
I'd say aces all around from me.
