Where to Buy Deli Meat Whole?

Submitted by: Luv  08/30/2009 1:31 PM

I recently purchased a meat slicer on sale at Lowe's to save money. We have a 7 member family so I shop more often at Sam's Club in bulk. I buy the large pork loin rolls, slab of Beef Rib Eye steaks, etc at a great discount to already sliced...

We had been cutting w/ a regular knife which took more time but worked. Even single people or small families can do this. We could then freeze as many a portion as we wanted to put together and just pull out which amount we wanted.

I decided on the slicer to also get savings on lunch meat and cheese. I have managed to find a few whole loaves and bricks of meat and cheese but not all that I want. We have found a 10 lb slicing turkey and 5 lb hickory smoked ham at Sam's. Any sources for additional types of meat and cheese would be welcome in the comments.

I currently use Freezer bags for storing but am thinking of the food saver as well. Will be researching that next.

whenever the 5 pound ham in the can goes on sale usually at Easter and Thanksgiving, I will have the store butcher slice it on their machine at no cost..I will divide and freeze. This way I can have sandwiches at a very low price...

I live in Northern California where we have a store called "Cash & Carry". It's a smaller buy-in-bulk kind of place. They have TONS of large chunks of meat. Some are already cooked (4 different kinds of ham) but most are not.

We also have "Smart & Final" out here as well as "Food Maxx" & "Winco". I believe they all have a variety of bricks of cheese and cooked meats.

I got a food saver as a gift. I probably did not use it more than 10 times and the heating element went out on it. I researched and found out that a lot people have had problems with it. The company does not repair them. So My family lost a lot of money on it.

Cooking roasts and slicing them, or chicken breasts is cheaper and healthier per pound than lunch meat. I buy cheese in bulk at the discounters.

I love my Food Saver. I know some people get lemons but I haven't gotten one. I started out with one from a garage sale for $10.00 and it worked but was hard 'cause you had to hold down with both hands. I have bought two since and the last one is about five years aold and I use it almost daily. I use the vaccum jar system the most. I buy in bulk and the biggest waste is food loss.Things like rice, beans.pasta, spices and all kinds of mixes stay fresh vaccum packed in jars. I have 1/2 gallons ones also for things that are in large quanities.I have both sizes, large mouth and small mouth, but will tell you the large mouth seals a lot better.I found a place going out of business and bought bags for $5.00 a box.Of course I bought a lot!Make chicken noodle soup mix and vaccum pack to stay fresh and give away at Christmas. Makes a VERY nice gift.LOVE MY FOOD SAVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have an old hand crank meat slicer I bought cheaply at an auction. It works well but still takes a lot of time, mainly clean up. I was much happier when I found out sam's club and most of my local stores will slice lunch meat free of charge. I still use the slicer but I have to save at least .50 a lbs to make it worth all the soap and hot water not to mention my time.

I love my food saver. My first one was in storage for a year and then the pump didn't work. Company did not repair, but got a great deal on a new one. Bags are expensive, but can be bought at wholesale clubs and reused except when using them for meat. Great money saver!

I purchased a Foodsaver (aka Tilia brand) --the switch went out after using it about 7 or 8 times, the company will NOT respond to emails, phone calls or letters even from the Better Business Bureau. They have hundreds of similar complaints! When it worked, it was great, but they make an abnormally high number of lemons! If you choose to buy one be prepared to lose $100+!

I just bought a food saver. My son is a hunter and is packaging his own meat this year. I did a lot of research online and read the reviews. I found the one I wanted at Wal Mart for about $50. If it fails to work, I will return it to the store and let them fight with the manufacturer about it.
