Tips for Buying Vintage Clothing Online

Submitted by: designermavin  09/01/2009 6:19 PM

I am a huge fan of vintage clothing. Love the history, the story, the tailoring and quality of older pieces. It is easier to find a good fit if you go to a physical thrift stores (church thrift stores are the best for furs and fabulous dresses) but that can be time consuming. but some of the best deals are online, esp with ebay.

When buying items online always make sure that the items come from smoke free homes, it'sso hard to get the odor out and vintage clothing does not always take kindly to dry cleaning. And steam clean delicate fabrics!

Also, don't be afraid to ask for additional pictures of seams etc. particularly with jackets you want to make sure you get a picture of the lining in the armpit area as that is always the worst for the wear.

The fit is the hard thing to figure out when purchasing online—women were so much smaller 50 years ago!!! But the good thing is that clothing was often made better then too--there was not as much skimping on fabric and often there is extra fabric along the seams so you can generally easily ahve vintage items let out.

I can help you get smoke odor out of vintage or just about anything.

If it's something that won't be hurt by it - you can actually bury it in a rubbermade tote filled with charcoal briquettes and plain clay kitty litter for a couple of weeks. Placing it in the sun a couple of days will help leach the odor out into the litter/charcoal too.

If that is impractical - get an old fridge grate that fits a tote and make a rack and lay things in there, refolding and turning every couple of days until the odor is gone.

This method will work for books, shoes, purses and of course clothing or any other soft surface that needs deodorizing and you can't wash it.
