Getting Kids to Eat Store Brand Cereal

Submitted by:  09/04/2009 4:42 PM

When my kids developed a fierce love for brand name cereals, I started putting their cereals in plastic containers with a scoop they could use to serve themselves. As the level got lower, I replaced their favorite brand name with a store/generic substitute; most stores do have inexpensive copies of the most popular brands. The kids never noticed the difference, but my budget sure did!

My kids would laugh at your kids for even trying to be loyal to one brand (not in a mean way just think its funny.) I only buy cereal when its under a $1 a good sized box so they don't get real cereal very often but I make homemade granola from oatmeal and peanut butter they love it and my bonus is that it fills them up so much faster than the store bought kind.

Now that all my kids are grown I think back at all the times I misled them but not out and out lied.

I put non-fat dry milk into the milk (without their knowledge) store brand salad dressing in the Miracle Whip Jar, store brand ceral in the ceral container, whipped dry milk into the butter to make it last longer, the best one is the brand name clothes that were new (garage sale!) came from a sidewalk sale in town.

I don't do that to my grandkids, I have taught them to be proud of anything that is good but inexpensive to buy. we pride ourselves on our sales and the nice things we find for the CHEAP!!!!! My grandkids will drink ANY kind of milk. It's how they were taught. I admit I spoiled my kids. Oh well, they know better now! LOL

I find when I use coupons for brand name cereals I can beat the store brands significantly. My local market runs buy one get one free cereals weekly(different brands and types) and when I see something I like I stock up combining the sale price plus the coupons.
For instance I just got Trix cereal for $1.00 during a sale.

I generally buy one brand name cereal keep the box switch the liner they never know the difference. I sure do notice the difference in my grocery bill. Generic cereals are generally 50% to 75 % cheaper.
