"100 Money-Saving Health Tips" (LifeScript)

Submitted by: Tip Hero  09/22/2009 6:25 PM

As the family's chief financial officer, women need to pinch pennies any place they can. As its medical CEO, they're also responsible for keeping everyone - from the kids, to parents and husbands - healthy...
...and so begins LifeScript's article titled "100 Money-Saving Health Tips".

Given the exorbitant cost of health care these days, LifeScript's comprehensive list of money saving tips can help to offset some health care-related expenses. The tips aren't limited to strictly health care costs, but include tips on: Diet & Fitness, Healthy Eating, Healthy Restaurant Meals, Healthy Travel, Healthy Beauty, and Healthy Style (we're not quite sure how this last one fits in, but maybe the thought is that these tips help you save money so you can afford health care? Hmmm....).

Here are some of our favorite tips from the article:

  1. Vaccinate for Free - With possibly the worst flu season in years coming upon us, get your children vaccinated for free from the federal government's "Vaccines for Children Program". See details at www.CDC.gov.

  2. Save on Prescriptions w/Free Samples - Ask your doctor for free samples of your regular medicines. Dermatologists may also have freebies of face creams, cleansers and sunscreens. Eye doctors often give out free contact lens cleaners.

  3. Save on Insurance Plans - If you're self-employed, investigate health care plans offered by associations or professional groups. Large organizations get volume discounts that they pass on to members.

  4. Low Cost Dental Work - Dental schools offer free or low-cost ways to keep your teeth healthy through organizations like National Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped or Remote Area Medical.

  5. Save on Prescriptions w/Drugstore Clubs - Ask your pharmacist or check your drugstore's website for prescription savings clubs.... BJs Wholesale Clubs' free Physician's Rx Care Discount Card can save an average of 15% on brand medications and up to 46% on generics.

Go to the county health department for routine screenings and tests. They charge a fraction of the cost charged by doctor's offices. Also develop good hygiene habits. This goes a long way in avoiding diseases like the flu.

Look for health fairs. This Saturday, I'm having my cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, BMI, and bone density checked for free.

They are also doing pap smears and mammograms free for people without insurance.

They also give away samples of health-related items.

This kind of fair is held often here in Cincinnati, I'm sure elsewhere too.

Diet and exercise should be on that list, as well. It's your own personal insurance policy that will keep you OUT of the doctor's office. But, if needs arise and lead you to seek help with free vaccinations, etc, it's good to know they are available.
