Septic Tank Help

Submitted by: Karen Tindall  09/24/2009 3:10 PM

I read a tip last month that has really helped my toilets and septic tank! I do not remember where I read this tip, could have been on TipHero, great tips here!

Anyway, The tip was to use 3 regular kitchen yeast packages (I pay $1.12 for 3pks at Walmart) and flush 3pks down each toilet in the house to help keep your septic tank clean and toilets flushing well. And it works!!

I had some problems with "sluggish flushing toilets", not anymore, I have done this 2X's in 30 days and, even my granddaughter, 16, noticed! My husband is soo proud of me and if the person who sent in that tip sent it to TipHero, all I can say is thanks so very much! And if you are having this problem, please try it, it sure beats plumbing fees(sorry plumbers).

I also use 2T spoons of regular baking soda and 1/4 cup white vinegar down each sink in the house once a week, then flush with hot water. I have never had any problems with stopped up sinks. This keeps everything very clean and free flowing and it's cheap, less than $1.00 for a box of soda and less than $2.00 for a gallon of white vinegar. And it is enviromently freely plus it last forever.

One more tip for anyone interested in growing roses. I take 2 quarts of my leftover dish water and pour over my roses, and other flowers, vegetables, etc to kill bugs, water and stops fungus that can grow on your plants. I also take any old bananas, instead of composting, I now freeze the bananas "whole", peels and all, then a couple of times a month I use them as "spikes" and shove them into the ground next to my roses. This is pure potasium and roses love it! Your blooms and colors next year will be gorgeous. I learned this from a master gardener of flowers and roses.

Thanks,
Karen

How often do you recommend this 3 pkg. of yeast down the toilet regimne ? Sounds like worth giving it a try.

For clothes washing detergent I use equal parts of Borax and washing soda. Mix together in a container. Use 1 tablespoon for each load and 2 tablespooons if load is extra dirty. Another tip for conserving water- if I want hot water and I have to run the tap for a few seconds before the hot water comes out, I catch the cold water and use it to water my indoor plants or to refill my dogs water bowl. Thereby I am not wasting water. Another water tip, if you are in the shower turn off the water while you are suddsing your body once you have done your whole body turn it on again to rinse. Also don't let the water run while you are shaving your legs in the shower. Shave them and then the water back on to rinse.

When I first had my septic tank put in 25 years ago the guy who installed it told me to use yeast once a month to keep the tank working. I always used salt and vinegar to clean out dishwasher drains and the like. baking soda I'm sure would work (maybe even better) after all it's also a type of salt. I also use baking soda and borax to wash dishes in the automatic dishwasher and white vinegar in the rinse cycle. My dishes are sparkling clean.

Does anyone know if this yeast suggestion will work on slow toilets that aren't connected to a septic tank? We have a city sewer system, but our home is older and the toilets are constantly
needed to be plunged.

No Trish, yeast is not for slow drains or toilets. Yeast is a type of bacteria that aides in the process of a working septic tank. There are products that are bacteria type drain cleaners. Your older drains are probably partialy clogged and have a lot of build up in them. A water softener would help a lot. Don't use lye. It does more damage than good. Good luck

Thanks very much Gale. I've actually been using the soda/vinegar solution for the drains in my tubs and sinks and it has worked great, but just wondered about the toilets and the yeast
sounded great. My husband did tell me the yeast wouldn't do anything for the toilets, but he didn't really explain why.

For those of you with septic tanks you might look for bulk yeast. I buy it for baking and I pay around $3 for a pound I have never figured out how many of the little packets that is but its a lot.

you might also keep in mind that the soda/vinegar or salt/vinegar will just kill off whatever yeast you dumped down the drain anyway, and that yeast can't grow in a septic tank, because of the conditions that prevail there.

To the post above, yeast will combine to the bacteria in a septic tank and keep it workng.By working I mean dissolving the waste matter. The solids goto the bottom of the tank and that's where it's working and when it's dissolved the liquid floats to the top and drains off. Some systems puts the water through another process and when it drains,it is clean enough to water the lawn.Vinegar, baking soda and salt DO NOT "kill" a working septic tank. However, bleach and strong detergents will.Putting in the yeast on a regular basis will keep it going.Read on the box of Rid-X. It is the same as yeast.Much Much cheaper
